Ellers Residence

New One Family House The Ellers Residence is a brand-new 2-story home located on a spacious corner lot in a residential area. After analyzing the zoning parameters for the area and keeping the minimum setback lines in mind, we designed a square-shaped house that maximizes the space available to the owners. By choosing to build a structure that rises 30 feet above the ground at its highest point, rather than the allotted 35 feet, we were able to accomplish a larger overall footprint. In all, there are a total of approximately 2,650 square feet of livable space between the first and second floors of the residence, as well as an additional 1,100 square feet in the basement.

While the design of the home is square in shape, the aesthetics are anything but "square." We articulated both of the street-facing facades of the structure, though the front facade is more so than the side. The exterior siding gives way to stone around the base of the structure for nice contrast and to visually break up the appearance. Bay windows on the street-facing walls add further dimension to the exterior, as does the cross-gabled roof, which features multiple roof peaks with Greek returns. Decorative dormers and an extended front porch supported by squared columns further the look.

An impressive 2-story foyer area awaits upon entering the home. The foyer is open to the formal living room and also provides immediate access to the single-car garage and the up and downstairs staircases. There is a dining room right off of the formal living room, and because these two rooms feature bay windows, natural light and neighborhood views flow through. In the back of the main level is the family area: a kitchen and a family room that are completely open to one another. The kitchen is setup with easy entertaining in mind, and the island addition provides a seating area and separation from the family room. Perhaps best of all, there are two sets of French doors in the back of the house, both of which lead to the back patio area. Engineered joists throughout the first floor provide the support needed for the desirable continuous flow and open rooms of this home.

Open-plan living continues on the basement level of the Ellers Residence, where we created a wide-open recreation area that measures 34 1/2 feet by 33 feet in size. One of the most unique features of the home is the 7-foot square wine cellar in the basement. This room provides enough space for both storage and tasting, and it is easily accessible from the downstairs living area and the staircase.

All four of the home's bedrooms are located on the second floor to create separation and to provide plenty of privacy. One bedroom is housed in each corner of the house, and there is a shared full bathroom for the three guest bedrooms on the floor. Generous closet spaces and large windows are common features of the rooms. The master suite is also well-illuminated by natural light, and features its own bathroom, as well as his-and-hers closets. The home's laundry facilities are located right off of the second-floor foyer.

Outside, we positioned the garage towards the neighbor's house to provide an open yard and impressive views of and from the Ellers Residence. Both small and large tree species are found on the lot to add privacy where needed and interest where it is not. With the collaboration of interior and exterior design elements and careful placement of the structure itself, we were able to construct a home that fits the lot and the owners.
