Lafayette Residence

New One Family House One of our more unique projects, the Lafayette Residence is a 2 1/2-story home in a residential area. The lot on which the structure is set is compact; however, this in no way limited the floor plan. With a long rectangular design, we were able to fit a total of 2,153 square feet between the first and second floors. There are also several areas within the house that do not count towards the overall square footage: the basement - 948 square feet, the garage - 295 square feet and the partially finished walk-up attic - 363 square feet.

While we put together the plan for the home site, the building itself is a modular home built by Simplex Homes. The main benefit of going this route is that the construction process was much shorter, as all of the pieces for the home were assembled in a climate-controlled warehouse. The quality production and high-end finishes offered by Simplex Homes are apparent by looking at the finished product, and our efficient design only further complements the Lafayette Residence.

The exterior of the home is visually appealing, with multiple peaked roof lines, dormers and both vertical and horizontal molding details. The facade is clad in siding, though the base of the building features stone, which breaks up the appearance and adds dimension. Squared support pillars add a traditional touch to the spacious front porch, and the shutters surrounding the large windows further the look of the Lafayette Residence.

    Proposed First Floor

A formal living room awaits right inside the main entry. The use of engineered joists throughout the home minimized the need for support walls, and as such, there is a clear view all of the way to the back of the house from the front door. Our design allowed one room to flow seamlessly to the next on this level, and the completely open family room and kitchen in the rear of the home are the best example. Spanning over 24 feet in width, the great room area provides uninterrupted living space that is ideal for entertaining. There is a single set of French doors between the two areas, and this provides fantastic access to the 23 1/2-foot by 10-foot deck and the thoughtfully landscaped backyard.

From the first floor, a staircase leads to the home's basement, which also features an expansive open floor plan that is greatly enhanced by engineered joists. The bulk of the basement is dedicated to a recreation room that is 38 feet in length, though one of the home's five bedrooms and a bathroom are also located on this level.

    Proposed Attic

The rest of the bedrooms within the Lafayette Residence are situated on the second floor, and we designed the home this way to provide ample separation from the main living areas of the first floor and the basement. All of the guest bedrooms are set near the front of the house and share a hallway bathroom, while the master is a true retreat in the back of the house. A huge walk-in closet and a generous bathroom with his-and-hers sinks give the master a true "suite" feel.

To further the overall space available to the family, the attic is mostly finished, less the mechanical room. This area is ideal for a media room or even a giant playroom for the kids, though the options are limitless. Highly open spaces, great natural light and fantastic flow are common elements of the attic, much like throughout the rest of the house. The modern design of the Lafayette Residence makes the structure both family friendly and easy on the eye.
