One Family House Addition - Livingston NJ

New One Family HouseA complete transformation, both inside and out, the Livingston Residence is a true testament to the power of careful design. This home began as a humble brick split-level home, complete with a traditional design and a lack of space. Thanks to thoughtful planning and skilled craftsmanship, the Livingston Residence is now a full 2-story home with the space the homeowners required. Best of all, the transformation was as simple - and as complicated - as making a second story addition.

The front door remained in the center of the front-facing facade; however, instead of remaining at the ground level, our architects added an exterior staircase and a small front porch. This simple move created a greater separation of floors and allowed for the split upper level to become the true first floor of the home. The original lower layer became the walk-out basement. Besides offering storage and entertainment space, there is also a three-car garage underneath the house leading into the basement.

Entering through the front door is the new vestibule. This open area gives a great view of the upstairs staircase and provides direct access to the formal living room on the left and the dining room on the right. Following the hallway back instead, you find the home's great room, which combines an open entertaining kitchen with the family room. Bar seating, large windows and access to the back deck make this area the heart of the home.

The modern, light-filled architecture of the Livingston Residence combines with traditional decorating choices to give the house an appealing contemporary feel. Throughout the home, crown molding, thick baseboards, wainscoting and recessed ceilings nod at all the best of yesteryear. These details are prominent on the main floor and continue up the stairs to the second story, as well.

Upstairs, the homeowners enjoy the separation that comes with upper-level bedrooms. Immediately off the staircase is a small common area, and past that is a well-lit hallway that leads to the shared bathroom and bedrooms. The master and guest bedrooms are filled with natural light and benefit from spacious floor plans that promote relaxation. The master offers its own private balcony overlooking the backyard and the home's in-ground pool, vaulted ceilings, ample closet space and an en suite master bathroom.

As proven by the Livingston Residence, an upper-story addition and a skilled architect can make an existing home appear as a completely new structure. Now clad in siding and stone with a cool, modern color palette and thick white trim, this redesigned home is an asset to the neighborhood in which it is located and a now-functional living space for its owners.
