Southern Residence

New One Family House The owners of the Southern Residence were looking to expand their 1-story home to accommodate additional bedrooms, bathrooms and larger living spaces. This drastic increase in program called for a complete reconfiguration of both the interior and exterior of the house, and resulted in sophisticated 2-story residence which better suites the family’s living style.

Because the existing foundation walls were in good condition, we reused the home’s footprint to save cost, and only designed new foundation walls to support the requested additional square footage. Although somewhat confined to the original home’s outer boundary, we eliminated all interior partition walls and began arranging program based on views, access and flow on both the first and second floors.

Upon entering the home, the foyer expresses the house’s grandeur with a grand staircase that wraps the double height space. The new layout capitalizes on the amazing views from the west side of the home, which overlook a brook and manicured country club. The most social zones of the home – the great room and kitchen – take advantage of these landscaped views through large windows and uninterrupted division of space, and the deck off the great room is the perfect spot to view the sunset. The formal living and dining room have an axial relationship and dominate the center of the floor plan with access to a library off the living room, and the kitchen via a butler’s pantry off the dining room.

Upstairs, the master bedroom boasts a vaulted ceiling, a gas fireplace, and the best views over the golf course. The upper floor efficiently accommodates four additional bedrooms with spacious closets and shared Jack-and-Jill style bathrooms.

The home’s exterior has also been completely remodeled. Larger windows with a glazed decorative motif, dormers, and a copper clad front porch, create a refined aesthetic for this new home.
